Senior | How to manage the post-holiday period

Partilhar

The vacation season is usually synonymous with joy, togetherness and happiness. However, for seniors who are isolated from family and friends, anxiety or depression can become prevalent during the vacation season and/or post-holiday period.

In order to help combat feelings of sadness, social isolation, or even depression in the post-holiday period, it is critical to take a proactive approach. Some examples include:

  • Remembering moments:  Having access to photographs that hark back to happy times can bring back the joy felt once upon a time.
  • Remembering the best moments in life can help seniors feel grateful and connected to those they love most, even if they are not present.
  • Planning for the future: Planning new moments such as outings, dinners, and trips together with family/friends can help seniors focus on brighter, more convivial days, and thus gain momentum.
  • Physical activity: As recommended by a specific professional, such as a doctor or physical therapist, physical activity is essential. Physical exercise significantly improves “body and mind”, thus promoting an improvement in overall well-being.
  • Learn something new: Pursuing a hobby or learning something new is always a challenge that brings motivation and helps combat negative thoughts and depression. A simple activity like listening to happy music, can totally change a person’s mood and thus make that moment or day, happier.
  • Contact with loved ones: When it is not possible to be there in person, it is crucial to set more opportune days/times to contact your loved ones by phone. Visiting family often and showing how important they are is also essential.

IN SHORT, IT IS NECESSARY TO BE ATTENTIVE AND TAKE EXTRA CARE, ESPECIALLY IN CRITICAL MOMENTS OF GREATER EMOTIONAL FRAGILITY, AS MAY BE THE CASE IN THE “POST-HOLIDAY” PERIOD.

The vast majority of the Senior Residences have professionals who provide a psychological support service and promote physical activity, providing an improvement in the quality of life and well-being of those involved.
